My mom has been battling breast cancer for going on 12 years now. 12 years because she is a fighter and refuses to let anything slow her down or get in her way. Monday morning at 5am, I got a call from her local hospital who said, Your mother just experienced a seizure from the cancer. You will have to come in now to make decisions and get her affairs in order. Needless to say, we jumped on the first plane and was near her as soon as possible. It was again explained to us that this was it. They said, when they remove her breathing tube, shed have 2, maybe 3 more hours with us. Heart wrenchingly we said our goodbyes to my mom, a great and faithful servant of God. Our whole family was there in grief. Soon after, the head neurosurgeon came in to tell us the result of her MRI. He said, Well after looking at these results, it does look like she has a couple lesions in her brain, but nothing I think we need to do surgery on. Possibly radiation at some future date. I said, Wait a minute! Are we discussing future treatments here? Because we were told she only had hours. He said, I dont think the issue in the brain will take her. It will still eventually be the breast cancer. I said, Well then, if they remove this breathing tube tomorrow, wouldnt she be the same as she was before the seizure?. I dont see why she wouldnt, he said. We all leapt for joy! The next day (Tuesday) we had to wait as they slowly began the process of waking her up and removing the tube. The tube was out before 9am. She was groggy and going in and out of sleep (found out that she was getting the Michael Jackson cocktail drug...Good stuff, but takes a while to get out of your system). Eventually, her eyes locked on mine and she said, Bug (my nickname), what are you doing here? You came here from Minnesota?. I was lucky enough to tell her again, I am, mom. I love you. Im so happy youre back. She progressed better and better each hour. We spent the day with her again today where she got out of bed(!), walked a few steps and sat down in a chair. Its the little things. Her speech is good. She knows whats going on. Shes very embarrassed at all the fuss that everyone is doing for her. Seeing one of the nurses in line at the food court, he said, Your mom. She is something. She is a miracle!. I said, Yes she is! Shes still recovering at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Your thoughts and prayers have brought her where she is today. I humbly ask…please continue.
