My morning math misadventure. By Dean Barrow: Setting: My local Tom Thumb convenience store deli. Young Male Clerk (YMC): Sir, your order comes to $3.69 Me: Thanks, I appreciate it. (Hands YML 4 $1 bills) YMC: (Completes transaction on register, closes drawer then looks blankly back up at me). Thank you sir. (Looks at lady standing next to me) Maam can I get you anything else? Me: Umm...I think you forgot my change. YMC: No, I rang it up and it said change zero. Me: (Glancing over to the lady and back to YMC). Well, I rang it up in my head and it said I should get back $.31. YMC: (tearing off the receipt and pointing to it) See, right here, it says Change, $0.00. Me: (Taking the receipt from YMC and a pen off the counter) You said my total was $3.69 and I gave you $4.00. (Scribbling out the math problem for him) That leaves $.31 that you owe me. YMC: But the register says change is zero and I dont want it to be under. Me: I see the problem, you only rang in that I paid you exactly $3.69. YMC: Right, so change is zero. Me: But I gave you four ones. YMC: (again with the blank look) Me: How bout this, you reach in that drawer and grab me a quarter, a nickel and a penny and Ill be on my way or you find someone who can. To wrap it up, someone else finally came over and resolved the issue by saying that YMC hasnt been fully trained on the register. I said, thank you and kept my thoughts to myself.
