My mother, Lucile, was a soprano who sang in church, on the radio - TopicsExpress

My mother, Lucile, was a soprano who sang in church, on the radio in Seattle, and in local Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Here she is in costume for one of those. She was also a skilled seamstress, knitted and crocheted hundreds of garments, and was a good cook. She started me out in music, and let me develop my love of jazz. My dad Harry grew up on farms, first in Bedford, Iowa, and then in Cul-de-sac, Idaho, and Clarkston, Washington. He wanted to be a cowboy, but marriage took him to Kirkland, Washington, where he became a factory worker, a ferry purser, a lumberyard jack, a CCC forester, a gravedigger, and finally a water and sewage department supervisor. He built his own house in Kirkland, using mail order courses in carpentry, plumbing and electrical wiring. It was the depression, but they made a good home for my brother and me.
