My mother believed that she should stay in her difficult marriage with my father for the sake of the kids. Man, was she ever wrong. In fact, their miserable marriage became a prison of gloom for her children, one that offered no glimmer of hope, one that modeled misery as a way of being. When they were together, I was failing high school and unable to find the light in the darkness. After they split up, I began to excel at school and opened my first student business- my life made a turn for the better. Neither path was easy, but the end to the gloom-fest opened up doors where before there was no exit. Not to pretend for one moment that changing a family structure is easy, but its not always as hopeless as it seems...
