My mother has always been anti-cursing, so when I was little and angry at my brother, I used to say, “I’m thinking swears about you...” Today I went out to my mailbox and found a registered package someone sent me all the way from Malaysia completely empty. After an hour on the phone with the USPS and three different departments, I found out that someone actually SIGNED MY NAME for proof of delivery and then took the contents out of the envelope and left it in my mailbox. Empty. Never mind how much it cost to send a registered package from Malaysia in time for Christmas—which, by the way, is stamped right on the package. Never mind that somehow my postal carrier scanned it in as being signed for BY ME and hand-delivered while I was sitting here at my desk looking out the window as she put the mail in my mailbox. These were two books that someone lovingly put together, inscribed, and sent to me as a gift...out of kindness. With all the horrible things going on in our world, one small gesture can often feel very meaningful. It can leave you with a greater sense of hope for humanity. And then, *poof*. Someone else comes along and reminds you that nothing is sacred. I’ve already filed a theft report and hopefully my friend can do the same to recover the cost of her books and the shipping. Tomorrow morning I’ll go to the post office and they will be able to see who signed my name and where they were when they signed it, and I’ll find out what action can be taken on my end. Until then, whoever signed my name and took those books? Know this: I’m thinking swears about you.
