My mother lost her best friend of 40 years to cancer over the weekend. Mom tearfully said on Saturday, We have been best friends for 40 years and never a cross word between us. In those 40 years each watched as their children grew, their marriages crumble, grandchildren born, some with disabilities. They shared in the the joys and the pains they each experienced as if it were their own. They had some of the most wonderful of times. They traveled, shopped and played Bingo, had birthday parties and shared each others joy. Shirly supported my mom when, in her seventies, decided to become involved in local politics and ran for and was elected to two terms as a city alderperson. In spite of being in her eighties, Mom was there for Shirley when she became sick, providing respite care so her children didnt bear the burden of their mothers illness alone. When someone you love suffers as Shirley did, especially these past few months, it is a blessing when they pass, but it creates a painful void for those left behind. Mom again is leading us by example, showing us how to be strong in the face of great pain and how to rise above it and celebrate the life of someone you loved as a sister. I love my mom dearly and thank her that even now, she has lessons to teach her children.
