My mother passed away in 1991 after a long illness. During her illness, she kept herself busy reminiscing, taping her life stories, and writing. She lived when Congress Street was alive and thriving. I thought you might enjoy this poem she left to us. Pat South Portland, ME MEMORIES OF CONGRESS STREET By Lyllian L. O’Donnell 1990 Congress Street in years gone by was a great place to roam. Businesses of every category could be found not far from home. We had banks, restaurants and shoe stores and department stores galore. Not forgetting the small shops selling jewelry, candy and more. Entertainment was no problem with bowling, skating rinks and pool. Plus a choice of theaters providing great movies as a rule. Sunday was no exception when friends decided to meet For a variety of entertainment and a choice of places to eat. I’ve seen so many changes during my many years. But the changes on our main street can really bring the tears. Eastman Brothers Department Store was part of my wedding plans. It was where we bought our silverware, which has passed through many hands. Another unforgettable store, considered one of the best, Was Porteous Mitchell & Braun, where I purchased my wedding dress. The year was 1932, the gown was princess style, To be worn again this coming June, as my granddaughter goes down the aisle. The Congress Street of years ago remains a memory. A memory especially cherished, among the elderly
