My mother passed away two weeks ago. She was 88; this is her obituary from the Gainesville Sun. I have had many responses to her passing and I appreciate them all. Here are some details about her life. Its all true! ================================================ Antoinette Ruth Jourard (Toni) 03/23/1926 - 07/05/2014 Toni Jourard, an extraordinary lover of life with an indefatigable and adventurous spirit, passed away on the 5th of July, 2014, at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, following complications due to diabetes. Her story is a marvel of joie dvivre, and, despite many dark moments that would cripple an average person, Tonis tale is one of triumph. On March 23, 1926 in New York, Joseph and Sylvia Hertz announced the birth of their daughter Antoinette. Toni received a Certificate for Teaching Early Childhood Education from the Canada Institute of Child Study, Univ of Toronto (1946) plus one from UF where she taught from 1972 to 1982 at Santa Fe. Being the resilient and free spirit she was, Toni sought activity to lighten her grief, and she found it in Gainesvilles fledging, two year-old theatre, the Hippodrome. She was a member of the ensemble cast in the 1975, production of Aristophanes Lysistrata. The camaraderie of the company and its cutting edge repertoire was an elixir for Toni. She went on to appear in many other Hippodrome shows including Catch-22, In the Boom Boom Room and the South Eastern premiere of Equus. In addition to the Hippodromers, Toni had many close friends in the art community. Her homes in Gainesville and Crescent Beach provided Floridian versions of the Algonquin Round Table where many a glass of wine was consumed discussing the arts, politics, love, food, all things germane to life and art. She presided over these occasions with her boisterous, contagious laugh and her love for those pursuing the creative life. Toni was a world traveler and took every opportunity to investigate nature and the human condition. Her travels included snorkeling among the seals in the Galapagos Islands, traversing the rain forests in Borneo, and dining indigenously everywhere she found herself. Toni was full-throttle all the time, ready to jump in, participate, give support, enjoy and savor all that life had to offer.
