My mother was a Codebreaker at Bletchley Park during WWII. She told us when we were growing up that she worked for British Intelligence in the British Army during the war. She never said what she did. Then in the 1990s she calls me and says, I can tell you what I did in the war, (in her Scottish Brogue), I was a codebreaker at Bletchley Park. Well, she signed a life time secrecy agreement and she kept her word. Why can you tell us now mom? And her answer was she saw a movie about it, and if Hollywood knows what we did, then bloody hell my kids are going to know too. It was the proudest achievement for her, and during this, she did get to meet Winston Churchill for a brief hello. She said, Give them hell Winnie!, a story that always brought a big smile to her face. Well, this new movie, The Imitation Game, is about those efforts. Its not the most historically accurate movie. But, it captures the essence of the work. Likely, Annie Marks, Sargent Annie Marks, worked in the unit the decided what decoded messages to pass forward. Mom, I am proud of you, you and the work of the many others there, saved many lives and shortened the war. This movie would make you proud.
