My name is Felipe silva. Im a 26 year old college student and father from Sacramento CA. I have a very rare disease called osteogenesis imperfecta. This is a genetic disorder that affects collagen in the bones, causing bones to break easily. Sometimes from little or no apparent cause. Due to my condition, I am not encouraged to participate in strenuous physical activity. However, that never stopped me from doing so. As a child I loved sports. Throughout my lifetime I have had over 200 bone breaks, I still continue to be active daily. Early in 2013 I began running. I run long distances which is really hard on my bones. I often have stress fractures on my feet and severe shin splints. Yet, I continue to run, everyday. Most people with my disease are bound to a wheelchair. Some die at birth. Therefore I believe OI is my curse, and my gift. On July 27th 2014 I will be running the SF marathon. It will be by far the furthest run I have ever participated in. I want to find 25 children with my condition and write their names on my forearms. Each mile Will be dedicated to a specific person. After that mile, I will cross their name out and move on to the next person. I want them to know that even though they arent able to be there and run, that I am running for them. The last name on that list will be my sons name, whom also has OI. However, I want to teach him that we are not victims, that we are responsible for our own destiny. If you would like to be interested please contact me. I will post before and after race pictures. Happy wishbone day.
