My name is Kayla Saylor and I’m the rescue coordinator for the Kentucky Humane Society. I’d like to share information about a dog named Homer that we are running out of options for. Homer is a 3 year old, 100 lbs Saint Bernard that was surrendered to our shelter because the owners were experiencing many health issues. Homer passed our initial behavior assessment and did not display any behavior issues. However while being in the shelter we have observed some reactivity towards strangers while inside of his kennel, of which he does not display outside of a kennel. Homer is also not tolerant of other dogs and has to be the only animal in a home. Due to the level of his dog reactivity, we can not place him up for adoption. Homer is very sweet with people and does well with children over 10 but his needs would best be met in a rescue that’s experienced with the breed. Homer is neutered, up to date on all of his shots, micro-chipped and tested negative for heartworms. Home has been happy with us for quite some time but recently he has become depressed and is breaking down fast. We don’t think will be able to help him, and it breaks our hearts to see him give up hope too. We believe the best course of action is to get Homer into an experienced rescue where he can receive more one-on-one interaction. For his own mental health, Homer needs to get out ASAP! Please respond for more info. We have detailed medical and behavioral records. We care very much about Homer and have poured many staff hours and resources into him, but we have done all we can. I know rescues are always full and being asked for help, so if you simply have no space at the time, any suggestions of other groups that may be able to help would be fantastic as well.
