My name is Mark McDonald, and I am the Transportation Director for the City of High Point. Last week, the message below was sent out to an initial group of contacts that have been asked to participate in a workshop that is part of the traffic study for the proposed “road dieting” of North Main Street. Several of these folks have suggested that I reach out to you as well. Our City Council has asked my department to conduct a traffic operations study to identify and assess the impacts of reducing the number of travel lanes on North Main from two lanes in each direct to one lane each, from north of Lexington Avenue to south of Montlieu Avenue. Assisting us with this effort are traffic engineers and urban planners from Kimley-Horn and Associates, an experienced and nationally recognized transportation consulting firm with offices in Raleigh, Charlotte, and many other cities across the country. Over the past few months, traffic counts have been collected, the network has been built and verified for analysis, and a lot of other data has been compiled that will aid in this evaluation. Our next step is to hold a Public Symposium, which is being planned for Tuesday July 22 at the High Point Museum. More information will be posted soon, but in summary the program will include meetings with several focus groups during the day, and a workshop in the evening that will present the initial findings while gathering additional input from the public that will be useful in completing the study. The focus group meetings will be scheduled throughout the day, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and each session will last approximately one hour. The groups are: § Commercial Property Owners & Business Operators (10:00 – 11:00 am) § Area Residents – Johnson Street, Hamilton Street, Hillcrest Drive, and others (11:30 am – 12:30 pm) § Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Transit Advocates (1:30 – 2:30 pm) § Other Business and Community Interests (3:00 – 4:00 pm) These small groups (limited to about 15 participants in each) will meet with our consultant representatives to ask and answer questions, share ideas, and engage in discussions of the pros and cons of the road dieting concept from their own unique perspectives. Each of you were recommended by others to contribute your time and thoughts to a small group session. Assignments are noted on the attachment, but you are not obligated or bound to the assigned group. All I can ask is that you confirm your attendance, and maybe identify one or two other persons who you think may be interested in being a part of this important conversation (just send me their name, affiliation, phone number, and/or email address). Please note that we especially need additional participants in the Bike, Ped & Transit group. The evening session will offer similar opportunities for the general public, with a brief presentation, discussion, and general Q & A. Some of the questions that we hope to address are: § What is road dieting? § Where has it worked before? § What is the basic concept for North Main Street? § How will it affect traffic flow? § Where will the traffic go? § What can be done to manage congestion?
