My name is Pam Thompson and I teach 8th Grade Language Arts, US - TopicsExpress

My name is Pam Thompson and I teach 8th Grade Language Arts, US and Washington State History at Totem Middle School. As part of our study of US History, we have learned about the US Constitution. Students are now applying their knowledge of the Constitution by choosing a current event, court case or issue relating to the constitution, taking a position on that issue and preparing to present that position in a formal setting. This is where the need for volunteers comes in. Students are to present their position in a mock congressional hearing format. Our panel will consist of five members. Ideally, I’d like to have four parents and/or community members to serve with me on each panel. As a panel member, you will be asked to listen to student presentations, have an opportunity to ask students questions, and provide feedback to students on the quality of their presentation. We need volunteers who understand that these are 13-14 year olds who are taking on applying the constitution to some very big issues. Volunteers who can gently press them with questions who will also support them as they learn how to become responsible citizens. The presentations are scheduled to occur in the afternoon on April 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I have broken up the time slots into two sessions per day to provide flexibility in scheduling; there are two slots Wednesday and Thursday from 12:54 – 1:50 and from 1:54 – 2:50 and two on Friday from 10:50 – 11:32 and 12:10 – 12:50. Is it possible for you to volunteer an hour in the afternoon of next week? Or more? Please contact me with any questions about the presentation and interest in participating and supporting the students with this project. Because I’m often not available to talk on the phone throughout the day, email is the best way to reach me.
