My name is Sharon Maler Rios. I have been a Registered Nurse for the last 17 years and a business owner of Treasure on the Tracks for over a year. What some of you may not know is that I LOVE history and genealogy. I started working on my family history at age 13, and have a Family Tree Maker database with over 6000 relatives. I am a product of 2 German grandfathers, a Czech grandmother and a “Heinz 57” grandmother….English, Scottish, French, etc. I have 2 great-great grandfathers who purchased original University Land in the West area. I have contributed to 2 publications, A History of Tours, Texas, and The Heritage of Hill County, Texas. Also, I have been awarded an “Effingham County, Illinois Pioneer Certificate” and “Hill County First Families Certificate”. Currently, I am preparing to present documentation for membership into the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Graham Chapter, and United Daughter of the Confederacy, Mary West Chapter. In 2011, I traveled to Europe visiting Germany and the Czech Republic. Next year, I am planning another research trip to Germany and the Czech Republic, along with a side trip to Italy. After many years of interest in the early history of McLennan County, I have decided to compile a book of biographical sketches on the early settlers of West. I will also be offering certificates for individuals who are direct descendants of these settlers. The application for these certificates will be available on The West, Texas Historical Preservation Society Facebook page soon. I look forward to learning more about the descendants of the families that made West their home.
