My name is Will Crodick, and Im running for School Board at Large - TopicsExpress

My name is Will Crodick, and Im running for School Board at Large in hopes to help ensure a better quality education for all the children of Currituck County. Please let me state that Currituck County Schools are good schools. But, there is room for improvement. My main objective is to end split/combination classes. There are 14 split/combinations classes in the school system, all at the elementary school level. It would take only 1% of the current operating budget ($38,778,689.89) to have at least one teacher per grade level and dissolve all split/combination classes. Ive studied the budget, and believe there are ways to reallocate the budget to make this happen. The current board is opposed to this approach stating that Currituck County has always had split/combination classes. I believe we should want to provide our children, grandchildren, and neighbors children with better than what we had. There was a time when the United States was ranked number 1 in the world in math and science. Thats not the case anymore. The United States now ranks below many third world countries in these subjects. The current School Board and the School Superintendent place blame on state and federal budget cuts. However, the county provides $11,345,307.50 dollars of local funds with no restrictions to the School Board each year, which is 30% of the operating budget. The School Board and School Administration should be building the budget around the needs of the students, not building a budget and then forging the needs of the students into it. If elected, I will seriously consider every issue with the need of the students being top priority. I would also like to explore the possibility of using some of Currituck Countys occupancy tax which generates $10,000.000.00 a year from tourism to put towards education. I firmly believe to retain the best teachers we must pay them more, Yes, the state sets the teacher salaries, but the county can add to that if they so choose. Also, if elected, I will be declining the salary. I will volunteer my time, research ability, and my common sense approach to help ensure the children of Currituck County are educated to their God given potential. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at (252) 302-1680.
