My news for the New Year: Im leaving the L.A. Times after, gulp, - TopicsExpress

My news for the New Year: Im leaving the L.A. Times after, gulp, 29 years. In a couple of weeks, I start work as senior film writer for Variety. Im excited to be doing something new with some great people, led by Claudia Eller, a former LAT colleague and now co-editor of Variety. Im also sad to be leaving a newspaper and a lot of people I love. When I got to the Times I was in my 20s, I was single and the Chandlers were still in charge. Now Im married, have two kids in college and another in high school and weve had new owners....a few times over. It has been such a gift to work in my hometown for one of the best papers in the world for most of my career. I have worked with amazing people who do amazing things almost every day. They tell great stories and they try really hard to tell them right. And they want to have fun doing it. No wonder we all cling to this crazy and challenged business as long as we can. I will be covering the film business for Variety. I expect that being in the thick of Southern Californias signature industry will be incredibly challenging and invigorating. So, now, all you Industry folks who have been lurking somewhere on my distant horizon...time to step into the limelight and give up those big ideas....and scoops. Im counting on you. https://variety/2015/film/news/variety-hires-veteran-l-a-times-journalist-jim-rainey-as-senior-film-reporter-1201389847/
