My old WWII buddy, Smitty, showed me his two purple hearts one time. He said he used to have three. But that he had given one away. I dont know if I bought the third one story. But I did get to hold the actual two in my hand for a moment or two and then they went back into the plain lookin and dusty little cardboard box from off the shelf. He was enlisted-Navy and got them for being plucked out of the water, twice (on two occasions), once in the European Theatre just off the coast of Italy and once out of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, the other drink. He said he tried to go AWOL while going through The Panama Canal but that there was nowhere to hide. I used to call him, Capn. Well, Henry Weldon Smith had a lady tattooed on his arm and so I asked him if he could make her dance and he shook his head and said, No, shes too old to dance. Smitty signed up for duty when he was just 17 years of age. The old sailor passed away just before his 80th B-Day. I miss him, he was one of my best friends, one of my real lifes heroes.
