My oldest son came home from school a little sad and disappointed. - TopicsExpress

My oldest son came home from school a little sad and disappointed. He had a bit of a rough day it seems. Refused to do a portion of his work at school because someone upset him he said. After some careful probing for information we came to the conclusion that he created the situation himself by being the cause of distraction to the other individuals who told on him. The work he was avoiding and too upset to focus on at school was about Nelson Mandela, which I thought was great that he was learning about such an incredible man to which I voiced that opinion. He said I dont think hes important to me. As we did his homework together he dictated what he wanted to write about and I wrote his words out. Afterwards I asked him again, do you still think hes unimportant to you. He said yeah, I dont think he is. I thought about that for a moment and realized he didnt grasp what was in the text. I told him I was going to find a video to hopefully help him learn just how important he was. So I found and watched this with him, pausing and explained some of the wording and behaviors of the time when things were terribly discriminatory and even violent as a result. We also discussed how he would feel if it were him in those situations. He was reluctant to want to watch but he came and sat beside me and took an interest once we started. I asked him again once we were done was he important to him or not. Turns out he has changed his opinion. :)
