My opinion on cultural appropriation of Dia De Los Muertos. Im a Chicano, and I use that word to describe my identity because of the political, and historical connections with it. When I was a younger man I was radical with my fist in the air angry at the white man. But then I became a father and looking at the world through my Jitas eyes changed me. Of course I want her to know her culture, her history, and her heritage, but I dont want her to carry that anger and resentment. From her perspective shes proud of her culture and the more people who come together to honor and celebrate it the better. The color of our skin doesnt matter if were all skeletons. And I want her to appreciate other peoples cultures too. That means sitting in african drum circles, going to a sweat lodge, or eating corned beef and cabbage on saint patricks day. All those people of different cultures coming together to honor and celebrate our traditions isnt appropriation its appreciation. And I appreciate all the people who work so hard for us to able to come together in this way and share who we are. Oh and by the way we LOVED Book of Life!
