My parents have been married for 44 years. They wed 3 years after the United States deemed miscegenation laws unconstitutional. Theyve existed longer as a pair than Ive even existed in this world. They are wise and wacky and humble. Dedicated, honest, and wicked funny. Theyre trailblazers and my greatest teachers when it comes to loving and relationships. Here are 13 pieces of wisdom my parents have given me... 1) Anyone that says love is easy is lying to you. 2)Love is imperfect and ever evolving. Youll love your partner for a lot of reasons over time. Cherish everyone of these reasons. 3)Great relationships arent great because they have no problems. Theyre great because both people care enough about each other to make it work. 4) Youre two separate complex beings trying to build a life as a unit. Work as a team but honor your individuality. 5) Love your partner for their flaws just as much as their strengths. Its these idiosyncratic qualities that make them magically unique (my dads refusal to let go of his 8 track collection ranks high on my moms list here) 6) Laugh together. 7) Cry together 8) Be so honest it hurts 9) Admit your mistakes. You will screw up in love. Thats ok.Were humans not angels. 10) Be willing to compromise but dont lose your self in doing so 11) Always let your mother listen to her Tupac. Always.-my dad 12) Be careful with your words. Once theyve been said they can only be forgiven not forgotten. 13) Intimacy is more than touching. In the words of my father if a man can only be intimate with you by sleeping with you hes CLEARLY doing something wrong.
