My parents were not rich, but we celebrated Diwali in pomp. They toiled hard all throughout the year, saved bit by bit; but when festivals came, they spared no expenses in buying us clothes, crackers, gifts etc. They also welcomed their friends, relatives and even strangers to partake their share of happiness and the heart of giving. These days we spend money like water, but only on ourselves and a few near and dear ones. The beggars also get their share of charity, but apart from that, we dont open our hearts to none. I was surprised to see, when a bunch of kids were fighting over a box of crackers and their parents timely intervened. But instead of diffusing the petty quarrel, they took it to the next level, by making a scene in front of the world to see. Alas! The depths of our pockets have surely increased, but the size of our hearts have considerably shrunk. Children seldom learn as much from books, as much as they learn from seeing their elders behave. All said and done, I miss those old simple days, where neighbors were a part of family and festivals an occasion to express our gratitude and love for them.
