My participation in the Harvard Kennedy School Senior Executives - TopicsExpress

My participation in the Harvard Kennedy School Senior Executives in State and Local Government course in Summer of 2010 was a life changing experience that likely weighed heavily on my October 2010 Council speech on teen bullying and suicide (youtube/joelburns). I was able to participate, in part, through a scholarship from the David Bohnett Foundation and the Victory Fund & Institute. Applications are now open for Bohnett Leadership Fellows for the June and July 2015 program at victoryinstitute.org/bohnett. I am happy to, as Ive done in the past, write letters of recommendation for qualified applicants to the Victory/Bohnett Fellowship as well as non-LGBT applicants to the Harvard Kennedy School State and Local Program (Fort Worth Assistant City Manager Susan Alaniz participated in 2013). More information about the HKS State and Local Program, run by my friend and mentor, David King, can be found here: https://exed.hks.harvard.edu/Programs/sl/overview.aspx (I also know that 99% of us cannot afford the $12k and 3 weeks to go change our lives in Cambridge this summer, so I also recommend grabbing books by the incredible Marty Linsky who will be retiring next year from HKS: Leadership on the Line or The Practice of Adaptive Leadership: amazon/Marty-Linsky/e/B005HE2LYM/ ) For more on the fellowship and program, check out this short video (with me and a few of my friends, Mayor Annise Parker, 2010 classmate Judge Jonathon Lack, Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema, classmate Rep Frank Ferri, Leader Blake Oshiro, Treasurer Jose Cisneros, classmate Ian Palmquist (pre-lumberjack), and classmate Roberta Conroy: youtu.be/X4dQVZZcsl8 And a special thank you to funder David Bohnett, and cherished friends and national leaders Michael Fleming of the Bohnett Foundation, Chuck Wolfe, Victory Fund CEO, my friend George Walker, past director of the Victory Institute whom I miss, and current Institute leadership Denis Dison and Jaan Williams (of neighboring-to-Crowley-TX town, Joshua, TX).
