My partner bought me the complete series (9 volumes) of F. Edward Hulmes Familiar Wild Flowers for christmas. If you should ever happen upon them in a second hand bookshop, DO pick them up….they are absolutely delightful! About Oxslip, in the ninth series (published in 1910) Hulme begins….. Sometimes, as we are gathering primroses or cowslips in the sweet springtime, we find a flower that is neither one nor the other, though it suggests both, and this is popularly known as the Oxslip. Around this plant much discussion has sprung up, but it may be taken now as the accepted view that it is a natural hybrid between the primrose and the cowslip. We may, therefore, open ourselves up to criticism by giving it a place in our series, but it seems well not to exclude a plant that is fairly common and about which, therefore, questions are sure to arise…….
