My passion for nightlife and dance music has become such an essential aspect of my life, the very air I breathe, that its easy for me to take for granted the moment I first discovered it. I remember that moment now. I walked into a clearing in the woods three years ago and heard music I had never heard and saw people dancing in a way Id never seen: like they were free. I remember wondering how they did it. What thought or emotion motivated their unselfconscious joy. Now I know. I was thinking of this today, by myself in the car, reflecting on the music and culture that took my unsuspecting life and molded it into something I had never imagined it could be. You always hear people being cheesy and talking about how dance music saved their life. Maybe I wont go that far: but I will say that it deepened and enriched my sense of community and purpose, my inherent understanding of the harmony of creation. I will say that in spite of the fact that life is never perfect, that sadness and pain are part of the beauty, in these moments filled with music and marked by my bodys natural reaction to it, I find myself found: brimming with the peace which passes understanding, looking up at the sky and smiling and really knowing, really getting it. All of us are different and we all must find our joy. It looks different for everyone. And no one has asked for my advice, but tonight I feel a desire to give it anyway, wrung from my heart as honestly as I can. If you havent found your joy, understand that one of the reasons for your existence on earth is to find it. Chase what challenges you, cling to what inspires you, run from what darkens you. Embrace your particular flavor of weirdness, because no one will ever taste it the way you do. Do what makes you feel you are kissing the face of God. Realize it is worth it to risk everything to remember who you are. Dont give up.
