My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of Living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. Jeremiah 2:13. The Israelites were living as if they no longer needed the Lord. In fact they had entrusted themselves to other gods even though these gods could not respond to their needs. Are we guilty of living as if we don’t need God? We may know him as our Savior but we could be worshiping the idol of our own wisdom, self-sufficiency or self-dependence. The Lord could be saying to us today it’s time we went back to our first love, loving God wholly. Remember, the idol of self is a sorry substitute for God because he is the Great and Almighty God, creator of Heaven and Earth, the Lord we are to worship with all our heart, soul and mind.
