My personal top 5 albums of the year in no particular order with a little description of why I chose them. MICK JENKINS-THE WATERS___This project is so amazing. The first time I heard it, I already knew I really liked it. A few days later, I finally downloaded it and played it on repeat for a solid two weeks. I dont really like conscious rappers that much but I wouldnt even consider him one. He writes a lot of serious, real lines but presents it in a way that still seems catchy and new. The beat selection is top notch and how far he managed to stretch the simple concept of Water astounds me. A play through of the entire tape feels more like an adventure through a war between Micks history and his view on things as of now. The hooks will get stuck in your head but never get old and leaves you with a sense of self-improvement. Incredible project that I will be listening to for years. PS: Also, makes you want to drink water. LA DISPUTE-THE ROOMS OF THE HOUSE___La Diz took a turn on this album, adding in a lot more catchier riffs and bringing the intensity level down in general for the whole thing, but it sets an ominous stage for when the energy builds up and makes the high point of the songs that much more climatic. As always, the stories and the way Jordan presents them makes you feel low and broken in good ol Dispute fashion, but sheds light on a new side of the band while still feeling very reminiscent of their past projects. Definitely get this album. BEAR HANDS-DISTRACTION___The most overlooked album on this list. I can see why because really Bear Hands came into play when they dropped their monster single Giants. Just from how that song sounds, I think people assume they are a one hit wonder and there isnt much content past that song...They are sadly mistaken. This is a fantastic poppy work done in a very niche, punky way. I saw an interview with Dylan Rau where he was asked What makes you different than other pop bands out right now? His reply was Nothing, were not trying to be different at all, were just trying to make good tunes and that to me is awesome. So many bands pride themselves on being so different when really they sound exactly the same, but Bear Hands knew they werent trying to be different and that let them focus purely on making a fantastic album and that is what they did. The whole way through, really solid. TRAVI$ SCOTT-DAYS BEFORE RODEO___Travis has recently become one of my main influences when producing beats and while he didnt have a lot of production on this tape, I can tell his beat selection is leaning towards production techniques and instruments that he gravitates towards. I believe Travis is a pioneer of a very odd sub genre of Trap music that has yet to be fully explored. Coupled with that idea, he includes staple rappers of the genre like Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan on the project but throws curve balls like featuring The 1975 on a track. Catchy enough to stay in the Trap genre but clearly not afraid to think outside of the box and cube which is something so many rappers are petrified of nowadays. THE HOTELIER-HOME, LIKE NO PLACE IS THERE___This album was released really early this year but I didnt give it a solid listen til Fall. The intro, respectively titled An Introduction To The Album is easily the most iconic song on the list with flowing lyrics that slam a feeling of nostalgia in a new sense of the word. This album feels good while breaking your heart. The punky rhythms that encompass the hymns of a feeling that cant quite be explained mesh together so well, almost as if there was no other melody that would fit except the one they chose. The drums hit when you want, the guitar drops out when you feel it should. All in all, A well written album that has an undertone that will change your mood almost immediately, for better or for worse.
