My police tip of the day: Dont make police officers out to be the boogeyman with your kids. You better stop cutting up in the store or the police officer is going to arrest you. You better put on your seat belt or the police officer is going to arrest you. That scares kids. They begin to look at cops as being scary. That would be all fine and dandy if they never needed help, but lets say they get lost and are too scared to approach a cop for help. Or later in life they see something they should share with a cop. Im not sure what you should explain to your kids. My nephews have been around me since their birth. They know exactly who I am and what I do. They have spoken to and usually hugged every co-worker of mine theyve met. Ive got no worries about them being afraid of cops, they absolutely know they will be safe if they find a cop. They other side of that: gosh forbid something has happened in your family to cause a law enforcement officer to make an arrest in front of your children, try to explain to your kids it was cause someone broke a rule, not cause they are a bad person. Many times we try to make things easier for kids to understand. Cops are supposed to arrest bad guys. When kids see a cop arresting someone they dont associate as bad, its confusing and usually upsetting. I try to explain that sometimes good people make mistakes and they have to go talk to some people to explain what happened. Then I ask the kid if they are a bad kid. They usually say no. Then I ask them if sometimes they do something bad that gets them in trouble. Then I explain that when a good person makes a mistake Im the one that they get in trouble with. Dunno if my way is the best, love to hear other ideas to help kiddos learn about cops and such.
