My poor Sundance (Aussie) has a walnut-sized lump in the flap of his ear. He followed the tradition of the humans in my family and turned up with his medical problem on a weekend. The veterinarian diagnosed the lump as a hematoma caused by broken cartilage. I have no idea how it happened, though I suspect that he got injured when he was scuffling with the other two Besties. They are all big dogs and play rough sometimes. Sun is scheduled for surgery next week to drain and clean the flap. He will have to remain at the clinic for half a day to make sure no other problems develop. In the meantime, hes enjoying poor health. The veterinarian prescribed a steroid-painkiller to get Sundance comfortable until he returns to the clinic. I grind up the pill and mix it with canned dog food, a departure from his usual dry variety. This makes him sleepy, so an extended nap in front of the fireplace is just the ticket!
