My position with respect to Fort Knox Radcliff has always had a wonderful, symbiotic relationship with Fort Knox. That should NOT change, and will not change when I am elected mayor. Aside from Fort Knox being one of the largest and most financially important industries in Kentucky, we owe a debt of gratitude to the large number of citizens who have ties to the military community. Many of our city’s core strengths are a direct result of our Fort Knox ties. The work ethic present in our workforce fostered by our military relationship is highly sought after among employers. As well, Fort Knox makes Radcliff the most culturally diverse city in Kentucky—a trait for which we can be extremely proud. I believe we need to continue to foster and increase our relationship with Fort Knox. Unfortunately we have long relied on Fort Knox as our sole industry. Being tied solely to Fort Knox as our principal major industry, our local economy is profoundly affected by draw downs, budget cutbacks, and unit transfers. Housing markets suffer, employment suffers, and in general, our local population suffers. This needs to change. There is no reason why we can’t continue to cultivate and celebrate our relationship with Fort Knox at the same time we are searching for and attracting other economic engines to our area; particularly with the physical changes to our area due to the increased road networks and developing seaport access. In fact, with the strengths we’ve gained from Fort Knox, we are in a better position to capitalize on these new realities. Success in these will give us the financial diversity we need to maintain a solid local economy.
