My post today, is a look at very innovative filmmaking, in fact, his films border on genius. Maybe its the way he looks at things, maybe its his stock company. There is never a trick missed. Christopher Guest has been in my wheelhouse since he was on SNL partnering up with Billy Crystal. They were the Dark Days at SNL. NBC had replaced Lorne Michaels with Jean Doumanian. She had a heavy hand, but some good things came out of her reign of terror. Guest was the best. Eddie Murphy busted out then. Mostly there was Mary Gross, Tim Kazurinsky, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Joe Piscopo,Brad Hall, Gary Kroeger, lightweight and lame. But I digress. Lets get back to Christopher Guest. He exploded when he hooked up with Eugene Levy, Catherine O Hara, Fred Willard,Harry Shearer and the rest of his stock company. First they gave us This Is Spinal Tap. with dwarves dancing around a miniature Stonehenge. Just great, then Waiting For Guffman with Guest as Corky the unrequited genius stage director who gave the world Backdraft, The Musical. How can it get better than that? Just wait for Eugene Levy in Best In Showthe dog show dog owner with literally two left feet . Then A Mighty Wind..Theres a Mighty Winda blowin its blowin across the sea. Its blowin for peace and freedom, its blowin you and me!. His nifty character study For Your Consideration spare and lean, but like all the others, mostly improvised. Thats the genius, theyre all seemless , funny, and delightful. It goes to 11.
