My purpose for reposting and following up is NOT to begin another - TopicsExpress

My purpose for reposting and following up is NOT to begin another thread of arguments for or against vaccination. The content interests me but only because it is just the kind of content that creates strong divisions between deductive and inductive logic. And I am specifically interested in listening to views regarding the tenacity of our beliefs in the face of opposing arguments (or logic). What makes us firmly cling to facts because of evidence (even if it that evidence is purely inductive) or hold to beliefs despite deductive evidence of the contrary (e.g., The Flat Earth Society is seemingly absurd yet it persists) and, conversely, what changes our mind? Additionally, as an artist I am more than curious. Do documentary films (or first person accounts) trigger more doubt in ones mind than a peer-reviewed science-based article? Could a sliver of doubt make someone shift (say from one side to the other)? Finally, if there is NO way to prove a fact, how do we decide which way we will go to err on the side of caution? More background for reposting: As I was reading through The Brain Cafe thread this morning, I came across someones post (sorry I have forgotten who) with this NFB (National Film Board) documentary exposing the anti-vaccine movement. I read the entire thread of comments (there were some very interesting, very vivid viewpoints on both sides of the argument). Then I watched the film in its entirety (because it is an NFB film). But when I went back to look for the post so that I could pose a question, I could no longer find it. (????) Additional background, my ex husband is a pharmaceutical rep who once worked for Eli-Lilly Canada. He and his family, filled with nurses, doctors and chemists, lean more distinctively on the side of science. My children have benefitted from their fathers and my own high regard for science. At the same time, I am an artist, educator, and philosopher, which makes me approach life with less certitude (and more questions than answers).
