My reaction to this: so what? Money in politics would mean nothing if people would just stop believing the representations made in campaign advertisements. They are never truthful, and that includes the ads for candidates or positions you support. If a business makes a misrepresentation in an advertisement for its product or service, an action can be brought against them for false advertising. But there is no such restriction on political advertisements. The result is that they all lie like rugs, and this would be true even if there was public financing of campaigns. The only remedy for this is that people stop taking the advertisements seriously, and that this become a feature of American culture. The internet has democratized both information and its dissemination. We are in a position to wrest ourselves free of the traditional gatekeepers of politically relevant information. That imposes a responsibility on us to make the financiers of campaigns irrelevant. Lets do it, and stop worrying about how much advertising a candidate can buy. It doesnt have to matter. Therefore, it shouldnt. usatoday/story/news/politics/2014/04/02/supreme-court-campaign-finance-mccutcheon-fec/7228237/
