My reason for joining a professional association would never and has never been anything else but to be :- *Part of a collective with a big picture view, focus, and positive, realistic vision and action for the future of whatever industry it represented. That it actually looked at how it can be an association for the members, and indeed involved the members in its running. That it has a long term plan, and uses its membership influence to organise such things as insurance deals based on being a member, that the associations name gains and in fact improves the standing of its members and the profession itself by its very actions and which media deals it does and the associations ability to perceive the long term affects of such deals, and that its leadership, when speaking in the media actually sounds coherent and value adds to the branding of the group, rather than looking off the planet. *To have and give mutual support with such a body both professional and comerardery, and done within the spirit of equality, mutual exchange and benefit, and that ideas are shared, encouraged and positive. To be able to trust the leadership to act maturely and logically, rather than through insecurity and an emotive and clear lack of empathy, logic, and balance. One reason I would never join an association for would be to gain extra media coverage.**** I have been civered by the media from time to time, and in fact had my own radio shows and television programs I have been a key part of over the decades, and I did it both before, during, and now after being involved in different associations.... Not because of being in any particular association. (****as has been stated to me by new applicants of one association). I would only ever recommend joining an association that :- *Is operated by the members, for the members, with all monies received accounted for and documented. That spending is planned and related to improving the group, and its ability to perform its functions. *That the association at least is registered with ASIC, that it at the very least has secured its own domain name that actually relates to its branding, rather than finding its association name with a dot come dot au that has been hijacked by another group. A great example is this, lol australianchristianlobby.org *That the association is operated in a mode of transparency, with open AGMs, meeting minutes posted, elections that members can and do vote in for board positions, that the articles of association contain all rules that members may have imposed on them, with forewarning rather than suddenly ejected from the association due to personality clashes between ordinary members and board members. *You bother to be part of helping out, actively, not leaving it to someone else passively and expecting they will continue to act with integrity in the face of member apathy, complacency and laziness, its called a membership for a reason, leadership should always be scrutinized. *That the association has a future plan, a Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Values Statement that its daily and overall activities demonstrates it acts in accordance to. *Invites and encourages membership involvement. Rather than wanting to control everything and keep it obscured. *That the leadership is constantly seeking ways to improve rather than constantly spying in any members it thinks may be a threat to the security of any misdirected shopping money. This is what membership demanding regular auditing are for. Too late if it becomes a company, by the way. Lol. *That the association is constantly working on improving things for its members, whether its insurance deals, professional development of its members, accreditation, community and professional recognition amongst related fields, e.g. Reiki getting into palliative care and other health facilities.
