My response to a mates question regarding todays siege in Sydney: How do we remain rational when dealing with something completely irrational? What other option is there? Knee-jerk reactionism wont resolve the problem of religious extremism, and I think betterment through humanism should be the goal. The issue is predominantly a socio-economic one, tied to a lack of education... People with little education, located in dire circumstances are manipulated into scape-goating and attacking a perceived persecutor with the offer of an unfalsifiable reward (Jannah - the equivalent of heaven). Focusing on socio-economic equality and education seems like the most logical means to address the issue.
