My short foray into RHR produced one interesting result. I saw a spot of HS0ZEE on sideband and listened to him both through my own rig and RHRs Taconic station. He was S1 on my home rig and S4-5 on Taconic. Id been trying to kid myself into believing that a vert with a good ground plane could equal a beam. The Taconic experiment didnt disprove that, but it was certainly evidence that my vert could not equal a tribander at a good height. Following this, I showed my XYL pictures of the Steppir DB-11 and the KIO hexbeam. She said that the hex was not awful, which I think is as close to an endorsement as Im going to get. :-) Now, Taconic has an SP7GXP 3-element beam, which has an advertised gain of 8 dBi, and the KIO hex advertises 5.5. Front-to-back is likewise advertised as 25 dB for the GXP and >20 dBi for the KIO. So the hex would be a compromise, but not too bad a compromise. For the record, I called HS0ZEE from Taconic, but didnt work him. And, despite a series of arguments degenerating into accusations of alliances with the dark side of The Force, I have to admit that RHR is kind of cool, but I just like twisting dials and watching blinky lights more.
