My showstopping extraganza is well under way! REVIEW OF LAST NIGHTS FUNNY GIRL. Tonight FIDDLER ON THE ROOF @ MTV “Naw, take it! I thought you were bluffing.”, Which, will not only make sense, it will make you laugh out loud at yet another perfectly timed zinger, when you go see 3D Theatricals’ FUNNY GIRL at Plummer Auditorium. I have a particularly well hidden funny bone, so when my sides were cramping up from laughing so much at Nicole Parkers’ rendition of Fanny Brice I knew I was onto something grand. Humbly directed by Michael Matthews, who doesn’t miss a beat in this nostalgic romp thru a legends life. He is surrounded by a team, more like an army, of skilled crafts people. From Costume design to Choreographer (which I will get to later) all are to be well praised for going the extra mile to bring us this incredibly well done show. But, I have to shed some lumens on Jean-Yves Tessier, the lighting designer. Having a background and a passion for lighting things artistically, I really appreciate a well lit show. His use of gobos was nothing short of phenominal. And the moving fan over the “ladies” poker game, brilliant! In addition, two more who need to be acknowleded were Zach Ortiz and Nate Vestri, the spot ops. It is refreshing to see that someone trained them in the correct way to use a follow spot. It was as if the light was magically attached to the performers. I noticed. This show requires, by nature, big numbers to make the intimate numbers seem more lonley or romantic. It also has a multitude of non traditional choreography needed. Places that have no music or groups of dancers but have to be highly synced up to fit the feel of the rest of the shows movement. Kami Seymour did a fantastic job of keeping everybody in step. Triumphantly well done is the military, tap number in Act two. A true showstopper! I haven’t really addressed the other leads, supporting leads or actors. They all did a fantastic job and I applaud them all. But this show is about Fanny Brice. And exactly like Fanny, Nicole Parker stole the show, the minds, and hearts of everyone in the house! So much so that even the lighting paled in comparison. For Nicole would light the darkest stage, warm the coldest night, and make beautiful music where none was playing. She is playing Fanny, but really it’s just a stop for her on the way home, not to Broadway, but to a star that we have yet to see. Go see her, I’m not bluffing.
