My simple pleasures. Was driving along a dirt road and chance upon a sma fishing village. Saw a group of anglers and fishermen who just landed from a one nite trip to the open sea. They showed me their bountiful catch; 7 priceless ikan talang, a 15kg ikan kerapu, 2 ikan pari, and other fish. I was so excited to see the fish. These men were quick to share with me their secrets to this good catch: a good taikong (boatman), and fishing skills, and good fishing apparatus. They lost a 15-feet ikan pari (stingray) coz of inappropriate equipment and poor technique... .i was all geared up and plan to go fishing. I asked them how to go about. Hmmm...listening attentively when these men gave me an introductory lecture on fishing....fishing rods, electronic gear, lubuk, fish tackle, reels, umpan, fishing lures, float, power bait, cooler box, tackle box... Hmmm...there goes my plan to go sea-fishing. A far cry from my fishing experience. In those days, i used to go fishing with my brothers and cousins. We usually fish at the small water ponds and drains at the paddy fields. I used long sticks that my father cut from a tree, which he tied with a 2-feet tali tansi (nylon string), and a mata ginti (fish hook). We used cacing as baits. Then we will sit and fish. Yes. Me and my cousins caught a few ikan keli, ikan toman. Which landed up as the dish for lunch. Life was so simple then.
