My sister in law is the most generous, positive, forgiving, kind hearted, and hard working woman Ive ever met. My folks moved to Florida a year and a half ago next door to my sis in law and brother. Over this past summer, my mom collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. I could write ten pages of all that has happened and is happening; however, I will just say this. I have never been very close to my brother. Because of sister in law our family is strong. My sister in law and brother help my parents (who are only 63 and were perfectly independent before the incident in july 2014) My brother and sis in law work for a Christian publishing company, are youth pastors at their church in Bronson, Florida. My sister in law makes time to precook meals for my parents several times per week, She helps my mom bathe and dress, does her hair and nails to help her keep feeling beautiful. My sister in law, NEVER seems to do anything for herself and when I ask why. She responds that everything she does for others is what she wants to do, its who she is and is no big deal. ITS HUGE. It breaks my heart that Ive only been able to spend a total of 5 weeks helping with my mom. I live 863 miles away in Texas. I thank God that my sis in law and brother bust their backs to make sure my folks want for nothing. My mom is not helpless but does need help. It is hard to have your independence taken away in the blink of an eye, literally. My brother Brian and his wife do everything they can to keep things feeling and actually being normal for my mom. We find out this month if all the cancer is gone in my mom and how soon she can get back to walking without help and a few other things we are waiting to get answers on/for. We pray on a regular basis that her memory will be restored completely. Shes experiencing a lot of short term memory loss. My brother and his wife are the true picture of a happy marriage. Not without problems but with enough love and faith to overcome everything the world pitches at them. They have 4 children in their blended family , the youngest just moved out at 19. Their two daughters are both having babies this week. One was 5 weeks early and healthy born on new years eve, The other will hopefully be here tomorrow. One son has two children. So they work hard, live what they preach, ask for nothing in return from anyone, EVER. They do not feel entitled and when faced with adversity, they look at it as an opportunity to turn a bad situation into something positive. My mom is now forgetful, sometimes not so nice, in a wheelchair and my sister in law makes her feel normal. I told someone not too long ago, I could not have hand picked a more perfect being to be my moms other daughter. I know with all my heart, my mom could not be in better company. I asked when Darius Rucker was giving away Christmas Holiday wishes for them to please be able to have a mini get away if possible. I didnt get a response and thats ok. I am saving up to at least try to help do something for them. My sister in law has dealt with tremendous hate from both her ex and my brothers ex at different points and times over the past 15 plus years. And I know I wouldve been confrontational and mean. She has such a grace about her that she just says that they are that way and she is not going to be ugly. She was put through HELL in her divorce in the worst kinds of ways and yet maintained a loving glow with her kids and kept pushing forward. And now, they can all get together for the kids and grandchildren without incident for the most part. In my heart, I KNOW IT IS BECAUSE THE ONE CONSTANT POSITIVE FORCE IN THE SITUATION HAS BEEN MY SISTER IN LAW INSISTING ON BEING A GOOD PERSON KNOWING DOING THE RIGHT THING AND LIVING AND LOVING WITH FORGIVENESS WOULD EVENTUALLY PAY OFF. I love my brother and I know he is not easy to always get along with. They truly seem to bring out the best in each other and I admire their strength, courage, commitment, love, and understanding for one another and those they come into contact with. In my life, I have rarely seen someone so positive, truly genuine, even in the darkest of situations but Shawn is. And the slightest act of kindness that someone bestows upon her often brings tears of joy to her eyes. She appreciates the smallest acts of kindness but gives every part of her being to help friends, family, community, church, and strangers alike in the smallest and biggest of ways. I wish I could say I am as kind and forgiving as she is, but I can not, I can only say that I feel like she has been the glue that holds our family together making sure we all get together and visit and celebrate no matter how crazy schedules are.
