My sister said something profound on our Thursday night outing - TopicsExpress

My sister said something profound on our Thursday night outing with our parents last night. My Dad always gives me gentle jabs for eating organic and healthy as he calls it. He says things like, I just eat real food! or, that food YOU eat! like its some kind of plague or something. He is always seriously kidding of course but I really dont think he understood what eating organic meant until my sister said, She eats like you used to eat when you were young except back then it didnt have to be called Organic!. Genius!! So... That got me thinking, I bet there are some of you that do not understand what Organic is or means. Organic simply means food free of pesticides, chemicals, genetically modified compounds or organisms, hormone and antibiotic free meat, and animals that are farmed in pastures instead of caged in barns and warehouses. The USDA did not approve the use of pesticides on food until 1979. If you were alive prior to 1979, you ate organic. I remember as a kid going directly to the farm to get our milk. We went with our Mom and had our glass milk bottles filled and even petted the cows that produced the milk. It was full fat milk, unpasteurized, and wonderful!! Best milk ever!! I remember going to the orchard and picking our apples and peaches right off the tree, picking our pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, and cutting down our Christmas tree at the tree farm. I miss those days! Remember how tomatoes used to taste? I remember as a child taking a tomato out in the front or backyard and biting into it like it was an apple, no salt, no anything. It was fabulous!! Those were organic and pesticide free, yes I was a kid living prior to 1979 :)). Organic tomatoes today are better tasting than conventional (with pesticides) but they still do not taste like they did back then. Why? Our soil. Through modern day farming our soil has been grossly depleted of minerals... A requirement for growing properly nutritious food. Whats happened to us? Sickness, disease, cancer... How can you help? Simply, buy organic!! The higher demand there is for organic food then more and more farms will become organic. It takes two growing seasons for a conventional farmer to convert his farm to an organic farm and even then there is rigorous testing they have to go through to be certified organic by the USDA. They also face scrutiny by companies like Monsanto that are basically the mafia of the farming industry. They make and produce the chemicals and GMOs that farmers use today and they are filthy RICH! Buying organic also helps our Earth. We can literally reverse the damage done if more people opt for organic instead of conventional. Our soil will become more habitable for our green plants and the slow death of our insects that are needed for pollination will returned healthy happy pollinating insects. Financially, yes, its slightly more expensive to buy organic but the good news is, the popularity of buying organic has taken a huge increase namely because of documentaries like Food Inc and Forks Over Knives and shows like Dr Oz. In the few years I have been buying organic the prices are slowly decreasing. That makes me happy! Buy up America!! The End
