My sister (whose daughter is not allergic to any foods that we know of at this point) just gave her daughter some peanut butter for the first time about half an hour ago. Since they live at least 20 minutes from the nearest hospital she waited to try peanut butter with her daughter until she was visiting with a friend who lives close to one. She says her girlie is doing fine...no signs of hives and she is just chattering away. But she wants to know how long after exposure she should wait before heading home...just to make sure that there will be no reaction when they are not so close to an ER. She plans to limit her daughters exposure to peanuts and peanut butter to times when they are close to an ER...at least for the first 4-5 times until she knows if there is an allergy or not. Since both my son and our nephew (our brothers son) have peanut allergies (and our nephew has wheat and egg allergies as well)...that is one reason why my sister is being this cautious with my niece, even with no indications that she has any food allergies at this time.
