My son Tommi turned 18 last Sunday. I have told him since he was old enough to listen that when kids from the states turn 18, we kick them out of the house to get a job and learn how to take care of themselves and to become independent. Last night I put my son on a plane to China. I told him that when I talked about kicking him out at 18, I didnt really mean around the world. But use this opportunity to learn all he can. Knew this day was coming from the day he was born. Fathers day is this weekend. I will be able think of nothing else then how my little boy grew up and now is out on his own across the world. Reflecting back to my own childhood, when I turned 18, I left for the Navy. I never came back home. I never really united back with my family. Yes I have seen them on occasion. IN the past 30 years I have only seen my family maybe less than 5 or 6 times. I have traveled further and further away. Staring in the Navy, then to Florida, Then to California and now American Samoa. From here, I could only get further away if I joined NASA and went to the moon. I never meant to leave my family. Nor did I mean to stay away. Its just the direction the winds of life blew me when I left the first day at 18. I have been very successful in life. I have succeeded in business, politics and raising 3 great sons. I hope and I pray all my sons are as successfull and more then myself. I also hope and pray, that their success doesnt take them away from me like mine did from my family. Good luck son. Dont forget me. Because I wont stop worrying about you.
