My sons teacher: We have ordered a special fitness ball for Toby to sit on in class because he keeps impulsively swinging on his chair and hes going to get hurt. Me: Oh wow really? Ok, thank you... although I have a bad feeling about the ball idea. It may work for some but with Toby I can imagine the ball might not be such a good idea for many possible reasons. Teacher: Well thats what professionals recommend and they know best. Me: Ok then........ 1st day of ball in class for Toby today, I get a call from the deputy principal saying that whilst writing he impulsively stabbed the ball with his pencil scaring the teacher half to death and bursting his ball so now he is sitting in her office. Am I wrong to have stifled a giggle and to have tried to look on the bright side that at least he hadnt been hurt or hurt another kid? Some kids are just square pegs in a round hole in the school system and I know because I was one myself. I cant count the amount of times I tipped my chair over and banged my head because the lesson wasnt holding my attention or got into trouble for tapping out a rhythm on the desk with my ruler or turned my paper into an entire artwork of fire breathing dragons simply because algebra didnt compute and was driving me crazy. School days are hard for some kids, but we all have to go through it. I just hope Toby doesnt find some new way to get around the next new OT intervention they introduce and hope for the best!
