My special thoughts today go to my most peculiar cymbal of my Sabian collection: the 16 (& 18) HHX Evolution Ozon crash. The Ozon crash has a sort of a hybrid effect of a regular quality crash and a china cymbal. The concentric holes break off high and mid ranges leaving a direct salty sweet crash sound. 12 years ago in the Sabian factory (Canada) it took me 3 days to sort out what I needed. On the third day I had to hurry for my plane, and while leaving the factory Bill Zildjian asked me of If wanted to take some (new invention) Ozons with me. I thought Come on man, I dont need cymbals with holes in it - Bill said: Ok, well add them to your shipping packadge... 5 weeks later I unreeled the package, tested the Ozons, and since then theyve never been out of my sight again. After 12 years my 16 & 18 Ozons are still in the same condition: uncracked, unbroken, no fractions, no bruzes... I calculated Ive hit the Ozon crash between 720.000 and 800.000 times (also rehearsals) - and still they stand... What a strong instrument, what a great alloy, what a super design!!! =D
