My step-mom, who I simply called Mom, passed away yesterday after a brief illness. She would be amused at the recognition that she had a long and rich life and then passed away early enough to avoid ever becoming as old as my father, who died at age 86 in 2000, 32 years after they married. Heres her obituary. Rose M. Fischer Rose Marie Meyers Caswell Fischer, 85, Chittenango, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2014 after a brief illness, at home surrounded by her loving family. Rose was born in Bridgeport on May 26, 1929, the daughter of Edward H. & Uretta Mae Petrie Meyers and was a life resident of the area. She was predeceased by her two husbands, Leon A. Caswell in 1967 and George A. Fischer Sr. in 2000, and two sons, Barry Lee Caswell in 1984, and George Gerard “Jerry” Fischer, in 1976. Rose was a life member and is a four time past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Simon-Parise VFW Post 9596 in Collamer and a life member of the Arthur S. Moran Post 66 of the American Legion in Camden. A 1946 graduate of Chittenango High School, Rose attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse, and was a volunteer with Cub Scout Pack 113 in Bridgeport. Rose was a long-time communicant at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Bridgeport; she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, an avid gardener and a skilled cook. Rose is survived by four sons, Kenneth D. (Cheryl) Caswell of Cumming GA, George A. (Rebecca) Fischer, Jr. and Michael D. (Sharon) Fischer of Chittenango, and David W. Fischer of Syracuse, and five daughters, Sharon L. Edick of Camden, Tina M. Flynn of Canastota, Diane K. Perrigo (Robert) of Chino Valley AZ, Marilyn E. Borasky (Butch) of Pahrump NV, and Margaret T. Fischer of Byron NY, and a sister, Grace E. Brownson of Bridgeport. She was “Grandma Rose” to more than 70 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and in 2011 was blessed with her first great-great grandchild, Joseph Brown. The youngest of 10 siblings, she was “Aunt Rose” to dozens of lucky nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m., at G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive in Chittenango, followed by Prayer Service at 7 p.m.; burial will be at Bridgeport Cemetery in the spring. Rose was famous for her hospitality, especially with her generous gifts of homemade cookies, cakes and apple pie. In keeping with her knack for making sure that no one who entered her home left with an empty stomach, the family wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sullivan Food Cupboard in Chittenango.
