My story -- My 40’s seemed to catch up with me in a hurry. I was 44 and found myself heavier than I had ever been and feeling the effects. My back hurt, I didn’t sleep all well, my knees hurt, I moved slowly and I was told I snored my head off at night. I am big-legged so my “normal” weight should be 190. I was 223. I would look around in meetings realizing I was the biggest load of goo in the room. The worst part was that I managed to convince myself that being out of shape is what happens to 40-somethings and I would have to just live with it. It was depressing to say the least. October 18, 2010. I was in a meeting with three of my coworkers all of whom were doing Power90, the predecessor of P90X. 30-40 minutes per day, 6x per week for 90 days. I told myself that day that I am doing it and will do all 90 days. Personal commitment. The first week was hard. I was slow, out of breath and couldn’t keep up with the DVD. I was sore as hell by day 6. The next week was easier. The following was even easier and people started noticing a change. I did all 90 days without skipping a single day, dropped ~15 pounds and gained strength. I graduated up to P90X which was a lot harder and did another 90 days w/o skipping. Never looked back. I dropped 40 pounds, my back is great, my knees are fine, I sleep great, move great and no longer snore (that one is weird) and of course I have the footspeed of a gazelle. :-) The lesson: you have control. You can take control if you make it a priority in your life. I encourage you not to look at this as a bunch of workouts. It needs to be a lifestyle change.
