My student placement experience at ADAVIC My student placement at the Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria, ADAVIC, is coming to an end. It has been a wonderful experience working there once a week for the past seven months. I feel sad that it is ending. I have particularly enjoyed the phone support work each week, assisting people who call looking for emotional support, or wanting to know how they or their loved ones can get the help they need. Nathan has been a wonderful supervisor always encouraging and supportive. His sensitive and gentle way of giving feedback on how I was doing, and how I could improve my skills made me feel really supported. I really enjoyed our supervision sessions and conversations and learnt a lot, not only about counselling but about myself. Anna the director of ADAVIC has been a marvellous support throughout my placement, and her warmth and sense of humour have made my time at ADAVIC a pleasure. I am in awe of her dedication to ADAVIC and how much she does. My fellow volunteers Terri, Kate, Kevin, Jack, Jess and Belinda have all been so easy to work with, and I have learnt a lot from them too. Jasper the cat, a regular visitor to the ADAVIC office, is also a valuable member of the team, showing us all that cats are the masters of relaxation and inner peace. Thank you so much to all of you. I will miss seeing you all each week but I will keep in touch. What have I learnt from my time at ADAVIC? I have learnt of the dedication of every one who works there to improving the lives of people who suffer from anxiety. I have learnt that ADAVIC is not government funded. I think it should be. I have learnt that one of the major obstacles to people receiving counselling is the lack of access to affordable counselling. This lack of access should be a major priority for governments and we as a society should insist on it. I have also learnt a lot about myself, where I need to improve, what I need to be aware of, and what I am good at. I have enjoyed my placement at ADAVIC so much that I plan to continue my involvement with the organisation in whatever ways I can be of use. Thank you again. By Voula Augerinos We are happy to announce that Voula will continue to work as a volunteer with ADAVIC as admin to this page and our closed group ADAVIC Online Chat and continue to provide articles for our quarterly newsletter.
