My summer weekend project is to clear out the weedy mess between the sidewalk and street and replace it with low-maintenance perennials and mulch. We lost 2 trees last year, so 2weeks ago I started around the baby replacement tree, to keep competition for water and nutrients away from it. I did a strip from the sidewalk to the concrete barrier, then last weekend ai did a strip next to that, and this weekend I got all the way over to the property line. First, I hand-dug up all the weeds and grass, and dumped it all into a low spot in the back yard. Then Im covering the bare soil with corrugated cardboard as an additional weed barrier, followed by mulch. Over time, the cardboard breaks down naturally, and its much easier to punch through with a spade to plant something than landscape fabric. Also, as the tree grows, landscape fabric would choke it, where the cardboard wont.
