My take on Amendment 1. On the surface it seems like a good idea. However, a amendment to the Florida Constitution is not the way these types of issues are handled. They say no new taxes are created. Well, that means the funds are to be taken from an already strapped budget. Doesnt sound good to me for several other reasons.:. 1. Gives the government control over more land than the state has the ability to manage and protect from invasive species. 2. Gives no way for the Florida Legislature to create a budget in the event of a future downturn in the economy. 3. Encourages other special interests to try to get their funding placed in the Constitution undermining the purpose of the very people we elect to govern these issues. 4. Is not a responsible or effective way of protecting Florida’s environmental resources. 5. There are already other land acquisition programs in place. So there is no need for this amendment.
