My take on PB2.... After my post regarding peanut butter and how easily a portion size can end up being a shovel size instead of a tablespoon, I had many recommendations that PB2 would be a better alternative. I had never heard of it, so obviously never tried it. My initial reaction was Oh geez, powdered peanut butter, and my final reaction is Oh geez, powdered peanut better. Heres why... Yes, at first glance at the nutritional label, the numbers appear to better in that it has a lot less calories and less fat than other nut butters. However, remember, calories are not the enemy and neither is fat. You need both, but in healthy forms. Fat does not make you fat. Besides being necessary, good fats can help you lose weight, give you energy, keep you satisfied, and reduce cravings. A few questions I ask the PB2 users are these: What is the purpose of eating powdered peanut butter? Is it solely because the label says less calories and fat? Is it so you can eat 4 times the amount of regular peanut butter? The main reason any of the nut betters are a good choice is that they contain healthy fats, but so do fish and avocados and I can promise you I will not be eating the powdered version of these items either. When I eat nut butter or almonds, I eat it because I want the fat! It contains healthy fats as well as a bit of protein and vitamins. PB2 is extremely low in calories because it presses out almost all the fats and vitamins, leaving you with a low calorie flavored powder with little to no nutritional value and also has a small amount of salt and sugar is added to it. Now I wont say PB2 is bad for you or that you shouldnt use it at all. It could be useful if you just want to add a little flavoring to a protein shake or even some oatmeal. Just remember manufacturers know how to market their items. So while this powdered peanut butter may look pretty good according to the nutritional numbers, its really another easy sell product because people now have a fear of calories and assume anything low fat and containing lower calories must be better. As a side not, even when on a competition diet, with calories restricted, I still consume around 40-60 grams of fat (healthy fats) daily.
