My take on this: An understanding of our republic...its historical roots and its legal underpinnings IS important. I dont know why its only immigrants who must pass citizenship testing. I think it would be a good thing for EVERY graduating senior to know just what this country is all about. By the way, the two questions used in Dobbs example are not ones Id consider appropriate for such a test. The authorship of the founding documents of the republic is an interesting historical fact, to be sure, but I could not care less if a senior in high school knows the story of the origins of these documents--as long as they understand the provisions of said document. The same goes for the number of stripes in Old Glory or the meaning of the colors. If they thought the flag was designed by Benedict Arnold, I wouldnt care, as long as they understood that it is a symbol of the republic and of the precepts embodied in our political/social compact. rnm 1-24-2015
